How to Shoot “Light Painting Pictures”

This following tutorial is a follow up on the recent article introducing Light Painting.  This tutorial will teach many users the basics of this cool photographing technique.

Because this is a basic tutorial, for the sake of it, I will be showing these techniques with a digital point and shoot camera, specifically with a Canon SD870IS.

For these point and shoots to work, you must have a manual mode on your camera (not automatic).  The manual mode is what is required to do these light painting photographs.  At least 4 seconds exposure time will provide adequate time for moving to the “canvas” to “paint” your picture.

Light Painting - Photography

Light Painting (or Long Exposure) was introduced a long time ago, when films were still used.  But the films that were taken needed to be developed and would take a long time to see your results.  This changed when the digital age of cameras came along and allowed people to see their picture immediately.  This sparked new interest in the light painting scene.

For those of you who do not know what light painting is, it is when your camera’s exposure time opens up from 1/20sec to hours letting all the light penetrate in the shot creating a blur of lights effect.  Common popular photographs that include this technique are night shots of the city streets with the car lights trailing as they pass by.

Daily Tip 3:Browse Firefox with Higher Fidelity / Quality

I bet many of you don’t know this but Firefox lowers quality of images shown on a webpage to allow quicker surfing.  To toggle this setting to make pictures “pop” with higher colors, just follow this trick.  This is very helpful in viewing perfect color pictures on Flickr or if you are a hardcore color profile fanatic and you want to get the most out of your colors.

Basically, this tip enables color management profiles so if you do not have any color management profiles enabled on your computer / monitor, don’t do the following or else your pictures may look even worse.

16MPH Speed Limit Sign

I was bicycling around toward the marina and found this interesting new sign they put up in one neighborhood so I decided to snap a photo of it from my cellphone (pardon the bad quality).

I find this very funny because I was thinking to myself, where the heck do you find a 16mph sign?  I thought they only made them in increments of 5 mph.

Create Your Own PhotoSet in a Cardboard Box

You will need:

-One medium-large sized squarish or rectangular box.

-Poster Board Paper

-White Printer Paper (Super bright recommended)

-Scissors or Sharp Knife

-Invisible Tape

I just cut the sides of the box leaving rectangular holes, large enough for my white printer paper to fit over it.  The two sides of the box will be your light source.  Also cut the top part if you wish to take pictures from the above view or if you want to add more lighting options.  Tape down all sides of inside the box with white printer paper so it looks all nice and white.  Then get a few lamps (desk lamps work great) and position them to your desire.  Add your subject to shoot and shoot away!

This is my result:

Even adding a small riser or stand to your subject will make it look like you are not even taking the picture in this cheap DIY project.
