What’s a Windows Alternative to GarageBand?

Questions like these show up from time to time on internet forums, and communities.

One blog reader asked me this question in my inbox today.  I can finally answer this question to its fullest extent.  Especially when Acoustica Mixcraft 4 just updated to their newest version, making this the sleekest beat making program on the Windows platform.  It’s so good that I think Microsoft should include this along with every new Windows release, alongside with their Movie Maker app.

Best Tech Podcasts Review: July 2008

For me, I really only need a computer and internet.  The reason?  I can download so many great episodes of web TV that it isn’t even necessary to need regular TV, besides local.  Today, I will be reviewing 4 web TV stations that I have been watching for some of them, over two years now.  After the days at TechTV at G4TV died, all the former employees moved onto a new concept of TV.  Viewing it on the Web.  Personally, I don’t like to sit in front of a computer screen to watch or listen to 1-2 hours of episodes.  Luckily, all these studios provide an iPod formatted media that allows me to listen or watch their episode at leisure.  The 4 studios I will be talking about today are Revision3, TWiT, Ziff-Davis, and ChannelFlip.

Product Review: Logitech G7 Wireless Laser Mouse

After 3 months of usage, I am finally writing a review for this great product.  My previous mouse, a Logitech MX600, was not good enough for what I was doing, I needed more raw power and precision for my mouse.  The mouse styling is nice and sleek.  The curvature of the mouse is perfect for ergonomics and it feels like the mouse was molded for your hand.  When you have sweaty hands, this mouse seems to “wicks” the sweat away so that it always stays nice and dry while doing your intense gaming or work.

All You Can Eat Tickets for Oakland Athletics Review

So, this week for three games, the New York Yankees are playing against the A’s. I haven’t watched a game in about a year or so and decided that doing a good favor to relax and enjoy America’s pastime would be fun for a night. I searched tickets on the A’s website and not surprisingly, the tickets for their “Premium Games” which are Yankees and Giants are more expensive than usual. About $7-10 more expensive than normal home games.

There are many sections to choose from and for about $40 you can get great seats at Field level around 1st or 3rd base lines. Something caught my eye, however. “All You Can Eat.” I wondered to myself, is this some kind of buffet? Their seats are situated at the third level between sections 316 and 318 (puts you behind the home plate). The view isn’t bad either from up here, you can see the whole field and the baseball clearly. I bought three tickets for a few friends to come along and these tickets are $38 dollars. So if you were to calculate it out, the bleacher seats are around $10-15 dollars normally and the All You Can Eat portion adds another $23-28.

Apple TV Take 2 (Macworld Update) Software v2

Pros: An iTunes format movie and music player for high-definition televisions, capable of acquiring content on its own from the Internet or accessing a computer’s iTunes library. Supports playback of high-resolution (720p) rented or user-created videos, as well as streamed or synchronized YouTube, music, photo, and podcast content, using a relatively straightforward interface and 802.11b/g/n wireless networking gear. Runs quiet, consumes little space, and includes Apple Remote; works with iTunes software to let you move certain purchased content back and forth from the device. Now functions as an AirTunes client to stream audio content wirelessly from an iTunes-equipped computer, even simultaneously with other AirTunes devices. Available in 40GB or 160GB versions, more reasonably priced than prior models.

Cons: You’ll have to create, convert, or buy compatible content, based on Apple-limited video format support; YouTube, iPod-formatted, and previously purchased iTunes Store videos can look downright bad on larger HDTVs. Does not include video or audio cables of any sort, and may not be compatible with certain TVs that it can physically connect to. Wireless hard disk synchronization can take a very long time to fill over standard wireless connection, such that 802.11n is strongly recommended. Doesn’t connect wirelessly to other Apple TVs or network storage devices, and integrated USB port does not allow connection of useful accessories such as a keyboard or additional storage. Music playback and photo features are acceptable but not mindblowing; could still benefit from simple tweaks. Small glitches and omissions in certain Store, video and audio features detract from overall experience.

Review: Kensington FX 300 Speakers to Go

I have been frequently mountain biking while listening to my iPod.  I fear that if I fall, then my iPod will follow suit and thus damaging it severely (I have a case though).  I needed a portable speaker solution that I could clip on easily to my backpack or jacket and have somewhat decent speakers (portable speakers are always “crap”).  I searched around and I found that the Kensington FX 300 Speakers to Go was highly rated and it was at a very reasonable price ($29.95).

The speaker offers a climbers clip that can clip anywhere without interfering with your body and your actions.  Also, the speaker opens and closes, revealing a spacious space for any iPod that fits including iPod Touch and the full size iPod.  If your not an iPod owner and own another MP3 player with a RCA (3.5mm) headphone jack, your in luck.  The speakers does not use the standard 30 pin dock connector for the iPod.  It uses a headphone jack so it supports virtually all mp3 players.

It is powered off of 2 AAA batteries and I have found that the batteries last for a long time, probably about 4-5 charges of your iPod or (30-50 hours).  The speaker itself is internal, meaning it blows sound though a very thin nylon surface making it sound great.  The single speaker solution that Kensington used was a very efficient step as there is also a lot of bass in the speaker which you don’t get in most small speakers.  The FX 300 has great midranges and can be played loud enough if you are running/biking at high speeds or in a populated area.  With this, you can blast your tunes as loud as you can!

Some cons about this product are that the volume/on and off switch is very sensitive so you can accidentally switch it on if not in use.  Also,to get the best sound, you need to turn the speakers all the way up, while adjusting your iPod volume to max 75% or else fuzziness starts to occur.  Also, if you have a smaller iPod such as the Nano or the Shuffle, it may move around too much so make sure you have a case on it to protect it!

I give this product a 4.5-5 stars rating.
