These great guys at hackmii just released a lib for playing DVDs on the Wii!  Before, we were told from Nintendo that it was hardwarely impossible.  They are wrong and it is doable through software.  Why don’t they release a channel in the WiiShop menu for like $5 to allow DVD playback?  Who knows.  Read more here,

To run homebrew software you will need to used a hacked Zelda: TP game save, called the Twilight Hack, that allows you to boot code off the SD card. Since needing to run Zelda every time is a pain, Team Twiizers made the Homebrew Channel to boot code off the SD with a home made channel, but to install it first you need to run the Twilight Hack at lease once. After that, all you need to do is put all the Homebrew software you want on the SD card in the directory SD:\apps\*homebrew software name*\boot.elf (or boot.dol). A few warnings before you start….
*You will have to (temporally) delete your old Zelda off the wii and sd card so make sure you have it backed up on you PC
*This will void the wii warranty
*Running bad code could possibly and can brick your Wii
