Photoshop Tutorial: Lower a Car and Change the Color of it!

November 26th, 2007  |  3,258 views | Published in Photoshop Tutorial

Introduction

In this tutorial, I will be showing how to drastically modify a render of a car to lower it to your liking, and change the color. This basic, easy, six step tutorial will get anyone on their feet, taking their picture of their own car and photoshopping it to make it look better.

Step 1:

I have started out with this picture that I have found on the internet of a Lamborghini Superleggera. You can take a picture of your car, or use any that you have, as long as it has a somewhat of a side profile.

Step 2:

We are going to first lower the car to make it have a more aggressive, mean look to it. Select only the body of the car (no wheels) using your favorite selection tool (for this, I like to use the Lasso tool). Note that you do not have to make a clean select as we can erase the others parts later. Make sure to select the top area as well. After selecting, copy the selected layer (Control + J).

Step 3:

Now you should have two layers, the bottom being the original car, and the top being the selected layer of the car. Now with the move tool, move the top layer down just a bit until the car feels like it is low enough. After this (if you did not make a clean selection), you should have some spots left over. Just simply erase them with a small soft brush until it matches with the original photo. You should have this by now. Looks better right?

Step 4:

Let’s change the color of the rear lights to “pop” the colors out more and make the red more radiant. Create a new layer and select (polygonal tool) each rear lights and go to Image > Adjustments > Selective Color. Put the color to “Red” and move the Cyan Bar towards the left (I used 100% as shown in the picture). Do this for all three lights and it should have a more radiant glow to it (and not grayscale).

Step 5:

Now, let’s change the color to a color that Lamborghini’s mostly have, Yellow. Select the car, and go to Image > Adjustments > Selective Color and move the sliders to this setting (picture) and also make sure the Colors are on “Neutral”. Modify if you would like a different color car.

Step 6:

Since we selected the whole car, now we need to delete a few things that do not match in the yellow color such as the windows, exhaust pipes, tail lights, and the rear grille. Using the polygonal lasso tool, select the two side windows, the side mirror, the three lights and the 6 grille spots and delete them to retain the original color.

Finished!

You should get this nice result after adding some text and some layer styles.

If you want more of a wallpaper like feel to the render, copy the layer and make a reflection of the image and do a slight 90 degree Motion Blur as shown above. Also, if you would like a background, do a two color circular gradient such as black and dark gray for a nice subtle background. Enjoy!

Gaming Graphics Confusion

November 12th, 2007  |  3,897 views | Published in Gaming

Many people, nowadays, when they buy a new game for their computer to play, they normally check the system requirements first to make sure that their rig can handle it. This happened to me when I recently bought the new game, Call of Duty 4. Although it is not a graphically or CPU intense game, it is a new release based on many advanced shaders and models. I myself, have a Pentium 4(I know it’s aging, getting a dual core soon) 2.6 ghz with 1 gb of RAM, and a x1600 Pro 512 mb graphics card. When I installed the game and launched it, there was a button that said optimize graphics automatically, which means to test the cpu and graphic card speed and set configurations based on what the computer tells it. It gave me horrible results, 640×480, 2x antialiasing, and everything else on low. I thought to myself, my computer can’t be this bad can it? Many people think that if you put your game on the lowest resolution, then everything will run fine, but no, this is not the case for most games. So, I did the first few missions in Call of Duty 4 and realized, yes, its bad as it seems like it, 20 frames when looking at simple objects and that drops to 8-10 fps when doing those city missions. The quality of the graphics sucked because of the resolution i was playing in. After 20 minutes of choppy play, I couldn’t stand it. I quickly turned the resolution to 1280×900 (I have a 22in widescreen 1680×1050 native). Upon playing the mission, I noticed much better playability. I was getting around 40 to 50 frames per second during intense battles and 60 frames in simple environments. Turns out that if you have a slow CPU like me, and a moderate graphics card, you should set your resolution to the native res. of your monitor, or inbetween it somewhere. When you play a game on low resolution, it eats your CPU more than the graphics card and if you do it on higher resolution, the graphics card is taking more the load and the CPU less, therefore, making less of a bottleneck and higher game quality.

Electric Meter Hack, Cut Bills in Half!

November 6th, 2007  |  29,272 views | Published in Hacks

Electric Meter Hack! How To Cut Your Electricity Bill In Half! – video powered by Metacafe

This is an extremely cool hack that I found while browsing metacafe. This lets you ‘adjust’ your electricity meter to move slower than normal. This video describes in detail how to reduce your electric bill by up to 50% without sacrificing cold air or warm water! Results will vary per household, but we’ve had sucuess and we’re sharing it with the world. Lower your retail energy bill today…

Bear in mind that this is probably illegal wherever you’re staying and the proof of concept showed in the video is just way too large for it go unnoticed. But! You could probably come up with something smaller once you know the principles of how this hack works :)

Notes: The meter actually works on the principle of magnetic induction (eddy current). When you screw up the magnetic path of the meter, it slows down. I’m not really sure what the distilled water and wires are for though, perhaps its an enhancement. The authors of the video claim its fake (probably so they won’t get their asses sued by any power co’s) but I’m pretty sure it works, as I’ve tested a variant of their device :P

Get into Pay Sites for Free via Google Bot Index

November 6th, 2007  |  2,152 views | Published in Hacks

Ever wondered why Google returned search results that lead to sites (www.experts-exchange.com)that require a registration? How did Google index the site without a registration? Many sites want their site indexed in Google to receive more hits, so they allow Googlebots in. Because of this reason we can take advantage of this. All we have to do is disguise ourself as a Googlebot and many sites will let us in without registration.

To do this we have to change the User Agent. The user agent defines the browser and what version you are using. For example if you go to this site it will tell you what browser you are using, and it finds this info out by the user agent.

Changing the user agent is easy, to do this in Opera you have to uses these settings:

User Agent: Googlebot/2.1 Compatible: http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html

Firefox users can use this extension and import this file (right click and save) that has a huge list of user agent settings including Googlebot/2.1 and many other spiders/bots.

Internet Explorer users you will need to change the registry entries, to do this open notepad and copy this into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEYLOCALMACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings5.0User Agent] @=”Googlebot/2.1″ “Compatible”=”+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html”

Then save it as ua.reg and double click on it.

To revert the changes back, you will need to do the same but this time copy this in:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEYLOCALMACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings5.0User Agent] @=”Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)”

Save as oua.reg and double click.

To see if it has worked go here and your browser should now be Googlebot v2.1

Enjoy!

Right Side Brain, Left Side?

November 6th, 2007  |  273 views | Published in Random

Right or Left Animation?

THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test … do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.
